A new study from Penn State has found that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) a compound found in green tea, actually targets oral cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. According to the study’s authors, EGCG damages the mitochondria of cancerous cells, resulting in the formation of reactive oxygen species. These species cause oxidative stress while increasing the protective capabilities of the cell.
Research like this tends to focus on green tea, but EGCG is actually found in all teas that come from the camellia sinensis plant. This includes green, white, black, and oolong teas, but not herbal or roobois teas.
