Dental phobia is one of the main reasons people avoid even the general dentistry practices such as regular check-ups and teeth-cleanings that can help you maintain good oral health.
If you’ve put off going to the dentist because of a bad experience in the past or anxiety over dental procedures, Fairfax, Virginia, dentist Dr. Pamela Marzban is proud to offer sedation dentistry to provide patients with a comfortable, stress-free experience.
Sedation dentistry involves taking a prescription medication prior to your appointment. Although you will remain conscious during your appointment, the sedative will provide you with a heightened sense of relaxation and make you numb to sensation. Most patients who choose sedation dentistry have little or no recall of their dental procedures after the sedative effects dissipate.
In addition to easing dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can also be useful for patients who experience:
- A strong gag reflex
- Sensitive teeth
- A need for multiple dental procedures
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ)
While sedation dentistry is safe and effective for many patients, and can be used for a wide range of procedures, sedation dentistry is not for everyone. Your consultation with Dr. Marzban will determine if sedation dentistry is a good option for you.
It is also important to note that patients who choose sedation will need a ride home from their appointments. For more information about sedation dentistry, please see our Questions about Sedation Dentistry (This page has been removed) page.
