At our family dentistry practice, part of what we do is to prevent you and your family from developing tooth decay. One way to prevent cavities is with dental sealants, which act as a barrier between your tooth enamel and plaque.
Dental sealants are a plastic resin easily applied to the surface of teeth. The sealant hardens and bonds with the tooth, forming a durable barrier. Dental sealants are often placed on the teeth in the back of your mouth, where it’s difficult to brush and floss, and where plaque has a tendency to build up. Sealants can be applied to the pits and fissures in enamel where bacteria are unreachable.
Cavities are the most common childhood disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sealants are an effective, relatively inexpensive way to prevent cavities. Although children often get sealants, they benefit adult patients in certain situations. If your tooth enamel has pits and ridges that make certain areas difficult to brush, then you may benefit from sealants.
