A proper oral hygiene routine starts at home and it’s much easier and less time consuming than you may believe. To keep your teeth and gums healthy takes less than five minutes a day, and will make a noticeable difference in the overall health of your mouth.

At-Home Dental Care

The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth with a fluoride tooth paste after every meal or at least twice a day. Brushing should be done in both a circular and up and down pattern for around two minutes each time. Use a soft bristle tooth brush to help minimize damage to your tooth enamel.

Brushing should be combined with flossing at least once a day. Flossing removes plaque from in between your teeth in the areas your tooth brush cannot reach. There are a number of flosses available. Try finding one that slips in between your teeth easily, but that is not so thin as to not make contact with your teeth.

You may also choose to follow brushing and flossing with an antiseptic mouthwash. Using a mouthwash is optional, but it can help maintain fresh breath and kill additional bacteria that brushing and flossing have missed.

No matter how rigorous your at-home routine, you should schedule professional cleanings with Dr. Marzban every six months. These general dental cleaning are essential to keeping your entire mouth happy and healthy.
